“Hey Mom and Dad, I take it up the A!” They must be so proud!
A high school student in Texas used his salutatorian speech to tell family and friends he is gay, saying: 'I feel the moment has arrived for me to be publicly true to my personal identity' according to the Daily Mail.
Before giving his speech in front of classmates and his parents at Belton High School on Thursday, Mitch Anderson had never admitted he was gay.
The teenager, who was bulled through school, says since coming out he has received plenty of support and that his parents hugged him and told him they loved him after the speech.
Mitch said he had not been ready to deal with his feelings until last year, partly because he feared people would not accept him.
'So many of the kids in my school are so completely open minded,' he told KTEM. 'But then because you are in Texas, deep in the Bible belt, you have a lot of people with very deeply rooted beliefs who are not accepting of it at all.'
Although he had been nervous about making the speech in front of the largest class to ever graduate from Belton, Mitch says that as he approached the podium all the nerves disappeared.
He was also relieved by the reaction to the speech, adding: 'I’ve received so much support and kindness. Knowing that [people] found the speech inspirational has been really amazing.'
To hide the content of his speech from the school, the teenager handed in a near-identical copy, which was missing the references to him being gay.

I think this kid did a horrible thing to his parents by putting them on the spot like that. That should’ve been handled at home in private.
