Christine Quinn promises better condoms for all New Yorkers

With all the problems plaguing New York City that has it on a glide path to a Detroit-like destiny, the best Christine Quinn can do is offer New Yorkers better rubbers.

New York Post reports mayoral hopeful and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn is vowing to improve the city’s free “NYC”-brand condoms following complaints that they don’t measure up.

The Manhattan Democrat told The Post yesterday that she has repeatedly heard from sex educators, health-care workers and others “that the quality of the NYC Condom is making people less likely to use them.”

“That is a serous health issue that we must address,” she said.

Her campaign said users are upset that the rubbers rip too easily and only come in one size, while the Gay Men’s Health Crisis said some men have complained they’re too small, according to The Huffington Post.

The news site reported that Quinn got “loud applause” Wednesday night at the Black Pride Heritage Awards in Harlem when she promised to address the issue of the NYC Condom’s limp performance.

“I was at an event recently with a large number of African-American gay men, and they told me there’s a very pressing issue as it relates to New York City’s HIV work,” she told the audience.

“They were dissatisfied with the quality of the NYC Condom. So I want to tell you, we will be improving the NYC Condom.”

The city started distributing free condoms as part of program that debuted to great fanfare in 2007.

The condoms are standard-size, rebranded LifeStyles prophylactics, made by Ansell Healthcare of Red Bank, NJ.

The initial subway-themed wrappers were changed in 2008 with the new marketing slogan “Get Some,” which coincided with a major media campaign to get more New Yorkers to practice safer sex.

In 2011, the city Health Department chose Valentine’s Day — which is also National Condom Awareness Day — to launch a smartphone app to help direct randy New Yorkers to the hundreds of locations where the free rubbers can be found.

I don’t know if Quinn’s Lesbianism makes her an authority on prophylactics, but at least she not promising a chicken in every pot!
